Re: USC can't three-peat
starbuck is right, all major colleges agreed to go by the BS system to determine the national champion and recognize only the BS winner. Just because the ignorant press that is totally obsessed with usc or anything else in los angeles decided to not abide by the system that they agreed to because it went against their wishes. This is all I have to see one picture is worth a thousand words.

LSU 13 wins 1 loss
usc 12 wins 1 loss

Re: USC can't three-peat
Youre actually wrong though Beast, neither the associated press or the coaches vote for the bcs champion. The sears trophy(whatever its called now) was always the trophy presented to the national champs by the coaches. Neither the coaches or the press have to vote for the #1 or #2 teams from the bcs championship game. Had USC and Texas had a loss this year, the coaches could have easily given the big crystal ball to Penn State had they been deserving.
In 03, LSU was given the crystal automatically because at the time, the coaches were under contract and FORCED to give LSU the national title. This is no longer the case, the coaches and media are free of the BCS. All the BCS is, is a formula to put who they deem the two top teams together to play each other. In the past, 1 and 2 wouldnt meet, for example, in the past, USC would have played in the rose bowl, Texas would have played in the Orange Bowl and there most likely would have been a split national chamion.
The AP and UPI polls have been existence since the 1930s-1940's era and are recognized as the consensus national champion groups. The UPI ultimately became known as the coaches poll.
So the reality is, USC would have been 3 time national champs regardless of not winning the crystal all 3 years.
Just as in 1991, Washington and Miami were both national champs, in 1990 Ga Tech and Colorado were national champs. In 97, Michigan and Nebraska split. All of these teams are recognized as national champs, regardless of the crystal or the trophy that commerates the AP champs.

Not until this year were the coaches and media free of the BCS when they decided to not let there polls count in it. In 03 they did count in it and they were bound by it. and the BCS is now the officially recognized national champion by all major division schools not some poll. So by the reasoning you are giving USC can still be the national champs this year all they need is to have some poll somewhere put them at #1 and there you go (by the way this is how alabama claims to have 12 championships, I say this because Tennessee went back and researched and found that they actually have 6 national championships)

Re: USC can't three-peat
The BCS is not the OFFICIALLY recognized national champion, thats why you still have the term "mythical national champion" because there is more than 1 poll. You cannot discredit the AP poll, its the longest standing poll in the history of college sports. The AP poll was always considered to be the most prestigous poll until the UPI poll was renamed the coaches poll. USC won at least a share of the last 2 national titles and noone disputs that. You question the credibility of the writers yet you dont question the credibility of the bcs, please dude, get a grip.
I realize that Bama claims 12 titles, Miami would have 8 if they claimed them, but the general football public acknowledges the AP/UPI(coaches) as the consenus.
To get techincal, the NCAA does not crown a college football national champion. The NCAA and the BCS or any of the polls are all seperate entities, thus "mythical national champions" once again.
So in reality you can go by the consensus, or go be the technical truth that there has never been a college football national champion in division 1.

Re: USC can't three-peat
You are the one that needs to get a grip. The BCS is what they all voted to be the standard to determine a national champion and is considered the official standard. I don't like the BCS any more than anyone else but it is what is out there and until there is a legitimate playoff system to determine a champion. But like I have always said that won't happen because there is to much money involved in the bowls. And just like I said before the AP poll was part of the BCS system that made LSU the champion even though they had usc #1 every other factor had LSU #1 and that is all that matters. They decided to be a part of the system and abide by it until it happened to go against them so they cried and took their ball and went home.

theBeast is really thinking the way I do. I agree. They all said that the BCS was the way to go and crown only 1 champion and quit all the split championships. When they didnt agree with it they did what ever they wanted. in effect, they broke a contract to vote LSU the champion

Re: USC can't three-peat
The AP writers always had the ability to vote whoever they wanted #1, that was one of the stipulations to why they agreed to be a part of the formula. The BCS was created to get the 1 and 2 teams together, not to have a final vote.
You cant tell me one is more credible than the other, had FSU beat oklahoma in 2000, miami and fsu would have split. You can not tell me that just because Miami didnt get the crystal ball that they wouldnt have been the recognized national champions, they beat florida state. Florida State would have got the crystal but noone in america would have said that they were the legitimate national champs. I told you guys point for point, there is NO real national champion because the NCAA does not recognize anyone as a national champion. If Ohio State were to get put on probation because of Clarett or Alabama get put on probation because of Langham back in the 90s, they would still be national champs even if they were forced to forfeit all 12-13 games. The ncaa doesnt reward the trophy therefore they would keep the trophy and the title of national champs despite their record being changed to 0-12 or 0-13. Because it is a "mythical national championship" there is no wrong reason to have two seperate polls. People would have acknolwdged auburn last year as a champ and people would have recognized penn state back in 95 as a champ. There is nothing wrong with a split national champion and as long as the ncaa doesnt recognize the champion, there is no such thing as a true national title PERIOD. Theres no way that anyone can argue with that, its simply a fact.
